Diabetes is a common disease. Currently, more than 500 million adults are affected worldwide, and there are 1.1 million children and adolescents under the age of 20 suffering from type 1 diabetes. In Hong Kong, an average of seven children are diagnosed with diabetes every month. If diabetics do not receive proper treatment, the risk of serious complications is extremely high. The Children’s Diabetes Association pays special attention to the rising trend of childhood diabetes. In particular, it held a large-scale event called “Blue Moon November” in November, which is World Diabetes Day. The event included the release of the Childhood Diabetes Record and the results of the Childhood Fatty Liver Screening.

The report found that the incidence of type 1 and type 2 diabetes has continued to rise over the past two decades, with the number of children diagnosed with type 2 diabetes increasing exponentially, from 198 children diagnosed between 1997 and 2007 to 391 between 2008 and 2017. The upward trend is consistent with the current global situation, and it is expected that the number of people with diabetes worldwide will increase to 640 million by 2030. A recent pilot study on the incidence of fatty liver in patients with type 1 diabetes also showed that fatty liver has the potential to become a long-term complication of diabetes patients, and the incidence of fatty liver and liver fibrosis index in adults are much higher than those in children and adolescents, which deserves more attention.

In fact, in addition to publishing the children’s diabetes record and children’s fatty liver screening results, “Blue Moon 11” also staged the Lee Tung Street Blue Street Party. This month, there will be a number of “Blue Moon 11” activities, including the “100 Years of Insulin Diabetes Life Cycling Ride” on the following Sunday, to raise public awareness of diabetes.
