Enhancing access to diabetes technology

At YDA, we advocate for and support young people with diabetes in Hong Kong, helping them to grow into their full, independent potential. Alongside raising awareness about diabetes, we believe that access to advanced diabetes technology is essential to improving the lives of those living with the condition. By securing better access to transformative tools—such as continuous glucose monitors (CGMs) and insulin pumps—we aim to dramatically enhance diabetes management and overall well-being.

Why diabetes technology matters

Innovative diabetes technology plays a crucial role in effective, day-to-day diabetes management. These devices provide real-time data, empowering individuals to make informed decisions and take control of their health. Key benefits include:

  • Improved glycaemic control: Studies show that CGMs help lower HbA1c levels and reduce the risks of severe complications like hypoglycaemia and diabetic ketoacidosis.
  • Better quality of life: Continuous monitoring supports tighter glucose management, leading to fewer hospital visits and greater overall wellbeing.
  • Empowerment through data: Real-time glucose information enables proactive adjustments in insulin dosing and lifestyle, giving users a stronger sense of control over their condition.

What are we doing?

Diabetes Technology Discussion Forum
We recently held our first Diabetes Technology Discussion Forum that brought together healthcare professionals, policymakers, researchers, and community advocates. These conversations highlight the latest challenges in diabetes care. You can read more about the Discussion Forum here.

Additionally, you can also download the Summary notes from the Discussion Forum.

Engaging policymakers
We  are looking for ways to work closely with the government and healthcare leaders to show the health and cost benefits of funding diabetes technology. Our aim is to help create policies that make these important tools affordable for everyone with Type 1 diabetes.

Mobilising the community
Collective action powers change. Through meetings, petitions, and public awareness initiatives, we amplify the voices of the diabetes community. By sharing personal stories and highlighting the social responsibility aspect of technology access, we strive to make equitable diabetes care a public priority.

What can you do?

Your voice matters, and together we can push for the change. As we continue to advocate for equitable access to diabetes technology, we invite all members to share their personal stories.

Your experiences can inspire change and highlight the importance of access to diabetes management tools.

We are nearly at 5,000 signatures. Please share and sign YDA’s petition to show your support for the inclusion of CGM devices in the healthcare system for people with Type 1 diabetes.
